Apple has officially released macOS 10.12.1 for all macOS Sierra users. The Mac software update is available through the Mac App Store after previously only being available in beta to developers and public beta testers. The first update to macOS Sierra pre-dates Apple’s upcoming ‘hello again’ event on Thursday which will likely include new MacBook Pro hardware and features unique to the new models. For now, macOS 10.12.1 improves security and reliability for all users....

During Apple’s WWDC 2016 session What’s New in Security, the company shared two interesting changes to the way Gatekeeper works in macOS Sierra – one visible, one not. The visible one, seen above, is that there’s no longer an immediately obvious way to allow unsigned apps to open. The System Preferences pane now limits you to two options, App Store and App store plus identified developers. This doesn’t mean that you’re left out in the cold if you really need to open an unsigned app, though....

Kevin Smith announces he’s working on a new movie or TV project about as frequently as most people change their socks. Though he’s taken to directing well-received episodes of The CW’s Arrowverse shows, like The Flash and Supergirl as of late, he’s also broadcast plans for a new Jay and Silent Bob movie, which would help fill the void left by the proposed Clerks III movie and Buckaroo Bonzai television series, two now-defunct projects he was working on before the start of 2017....

Fox has delayed Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman prequel to February 2020 and given its old November date to James Mangold’s Ford v. Ferrari, instead. The move comes at a time of great change for the studio, with Disney projected to finalize its purchase of 21st Century Fox’s assets in March. This will reportedly result in thousands of job losses at Fox and sweeping alterations to the studio’s larger release slate, as well as a monumental shift in the larger media landscape that gives the Mouse House an unpredecented monopoly....

Lyft recently launched a charitable program called Round Up & Donate, and all through August the ride sharing service will be matching donations made with Apple Pay. Ahead of Apple’s expected October event with new Macs, IDC is out today with its quarterly report on PC sales. The analyst firm shows that worldwide PC shipments totaled 67.4 million units during the third quarter of 2018, which is a 0.9 percent decline compared to the same quarter last year. While shipments may have declined, IDC’s data is better than many industry analysts had expected. During Q3, PC shipments for forecasted to decline by 3 percent, but manufacturers were less affected by processor shortages than initially expected....

Today Apple released its M1 chip for the 13-inch MacBook Air and Pro and Mac mini. Currently, for the MacBook Air, Apple is only offering the M1 chip starting at $999. But for the MacBook Pro and Mac mini, Intel processor models are still available from Apple for the time being. One of the earliest members of the Apple Health team has now departed Apple to join the Gates Foundation. As detailed by CNBC, Dr. Andrew Trister joined Apple in 2016, but will now take his talents to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Trister was among one of the first employees to join the Apple Health team. He worked in a vague “special projects” role at the company, but his hiring coincided with Apple’s strong push into healthcare and medical research....

An investment note by KGI predicts that Apple will next week report year-on-year iPhone sales up 23.6% to 48.5M, but says that that holiday quarter sales will be down on last year, and that the decline will continue into the first quarter of next year. KGI says that China is the big factor, included as a launch country this year, and hence contributing to calendar Q3/fiscal Q4 sales, while last year’s China sales fell into the holiday quarter....
