The market yesterday was focused on iPhone numbers, so Apple’s announcement of Mac sales went somewhat under the radar. On the face of it, the news wasn’t good: year-on-year, Mac sales were 3.7M last quarter against 4.29M the same quarter last year … That’s 13% down year-on-year. Some were suggesting there are a couple of reasons for this. First, Neil Cybart notes that at last year’s WWDC, in the same quarter, Apple refreshed almost every model in its Mac line-up, making it a tough compare....

A new report from KGI today includes a drop in the firm’s estimate for 2017 iPhone X shipments, its forecast for 2018-2019 performance, and how far behind Android devices are all thanks to Apple’s new TrueDepth camera system. This powers the new facial recognition and tracking system for Face ID unlocking, Animoji, and more. The latest forecast from Ming-Chi Kuo sees a lowered estimate of iPhone X shipments in 2017 to 30-35 million units from a previous estimate of 40 million....

A number of Korean smartphone retailers are threatening legal action against Apple over what they consider an unfair policy on display models. They say that Apple’s approach imposes unreasonable costs on them … The Korea Herald reports. They say the policy is particularly onerous at a time when Apple has pushed up iPhone prices and launched three expensive new models this year. Retailers also complain that Apple also imposes conditions on exactly how iPhones are displayed....

LG has announced a 34-inch ultrawide 5K monitor with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, allowing a single-cable connection to a Mac that includes power. It has slim bezels on all four sizes. LG says that the 34WK95U is aimed at professional users. Unlike the Ultrafine 5K monitor which is 5120×2880, the extra pixels here over a 4K monitor are all horizontal, so it’s still only 2160 pixels high, but you do get the 5120-pixel width that make the most difference for a lot of applications....
