A report today form renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple will drop the 5.4-inch iPhone in 2022, instead offering a lineup of high-end and low-end 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch phones. The 5.4-inch screen sized featured this year in the iPhone 12 mini, and will be available in the iPhone 13 range this fall. However, it seems that will be its final outing. The iPhone 12 mini appealed to enthusiasts who wanted modern specs like 5G and the A14 processor but did not care for the big phone trend of the last five years....

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has run full-page newspaper ads apologizing for the privacy breach that allowed a researcher to collect user data that was later used by Cambridge Analytica to help elect Trump. Fallout so far has included investigations in the US and UK, lawsuits and a petition. The ads were run in the Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and six UK newspapers … The apology, shown in full below, explains what Facebook is doing to prevent a repetition, and Zuckerberg promises ‘to do better for you....

Slice Intelligence, which tracks online orders by scanning the email inboxes of more than 2M panel members, estimates that Apple has sold 2.79M Apple Watches in the USA, reports Reuters. The estimate does not include sales in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong or Japan. Slice last month reported that around 1.5M U.S. orders were placed on the first day of pre-orders, with sales tailing off rapidly after this....

Disclosed by the Apache Software Foundation on December 9, Log4Shell will likely take years to remediate because of how widely the error-logging software component is used in applications and services. Microsoft warns that customers might not be aware of how widespread the Log4j issue is in their environment. Over the past month, Microsoft has released numerous updates, including to its Defender security software, to help customers identify the issue as attackers stepped up scanning activity....

Right to repair advocates have described Apple’s recent claim to lose money on repairs as ‘absurd’ and ‘misleading.’ Apple made the claim to a Congressional judiciary committee investigating, among other things, whether Apple’s locked-down approach to device repairs is anti-competitive… Apple has always insisted that its control of the repair process is for reasons of safety and reliability. Right now, the Apple TV can control HomeKit accessores like smart lights using voice control on the Siri remote, but there isn’t a dedicated Home app on tvOS like there is for Apple’s other platforms....

The iPhone 8 leaks continue this weekend with images emerging of yet another dummy unit. Shared on Twitter by leaker Onleaks, the dummy model corroborates much of what we’ve seen many times in the past related to the iPhone 8’s design, including a glass back, vertical dual-camera design, and more… The dummy model pictured shows dramatically reduced bezels with a nearly edge-to-edge display. At the top of the screen is the cutout for the front-facing camera, speaker, and sensors....

The fourth developer beta of macOS 11 Big Sur was released yesterday, and it brings a small but notable change. With the latest beta of macOS Big Sur, there is a new option in System Preferences to disable Desktop Tinting while using Dark Mode.
