Writer Michael Waldron is set to be the showrunner of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki miniseries on Disney+. Marvel Studios has dominated the film industry for the last decade thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they’re looking to expand their reach once Avengers: Endgame wraps up Phase 3. Part of their plan is to develop miniseries that are set within the MCU and feature some of their bigger, yet underused stars.
One of the first projects that became known was a Loki series that will feature Hiddleston returning as the god of mischief, despite his death in Avengers: Infinity War. This is the only series that Disney has officially confirmed is happening so far, but it was not yet as far along as some of the other in-development titles. While Hiddleston has teased his return, many have wondered how this will be. A prequel setting has been assumed, and that now looks to be confirmed with the series finally finding a showrunner.
In a new report from THR, it has been revealed that Rick and Morty writer Michael Waldron will be the creator of the series and write the pilot episode. He will go on to produce the entirety of the season, which does not yet have a confirmed episode count. News of a showrunner comes with THR also providing the first possible plot details for the series, which they say will “follow Loki as the trickster and shapeshifter pops up throughout human history as [an] unlikely influencer on historical events.”
Thanks to Loki’s long life span, the confirmation that Loki will take place in different periods of time really gives it unlimited possibilities. The first two Thor movies showed that he knows several ways to get off of Asgard without anyone noticing, so there is no telling what types of adventures he could be involved in. But, the real key to this idea is the freedom Waldron will have to tell stories of his own without worrying about the larger continuity of the MCU. The movies have not explored much of Earth’s history before World War II, so Loki can explore periods of history that Marvel’s films would likely never touch.
Of course, the question that the prequel setting raises is just how much Hiddleston will be featured then. Loki’s age has yet to be specified, but he has been around for hundreds, if not a thousand years already and has aged over this time. Depending on just how far back in time the series travels, there may be a need for a young Loki to be cast. This would not only set up the possibility of Kid Loki one day being integrated into the larger MCU, but also so the series can show a slightly different side of the god of mischief. Either way, now that details on Loki are starting to surface, hopefully it won’t be too long before more news arrives.
