Lenovo Ideapad turns on when you open the lid of the laptop. Many Ideapad owners have companied about the shutdown issues, and the machine won’t turn on. Lenovo wants to create a unique experience for users. Sometimes the unique experience turns into annoyance and ends up causing problems. You can turn off the feature and manually turn on/off the Windows laptop.
What is the Lenovo Black Screen of Death?
Lenovo ships most of the laptops with the Windows operating system. We can’t blame the laptop manufacturer for the software-related issues. The Microsoft flagship operating system and errors go hand in hand. I have listed a few reasons why Lenovo’s laptop is not shutting down or won’t turn on.
Operating System Issue:
I have installed Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on the Windows laptop, and many functions don’t work on the Linux software. The manufacturer has optimized the unique features for Windows and not for others. We don’t have options and have to disable the auto turn-on setting from the BIOS.
Windows Bugs or Glitches:
Windows 11 is the newer edition from Microsoft. I’m one of the early adopters and installed the beta version on the PC. The latest operating system has many bugs and glitches. The in-house MS developers are improving the software over time. We have to put our focus on the driver’s stability because they cause issues as well.
Power Settings:
The power plan focuses on giving you the best performance and battery life. Modify the power plan in the Lenovo laptop and fix the shutting down issues.
Faulty Battery:
The batteries are made up of Lithium Ion technology. A faulty battery doesn’t have enough strength to turn on the laptop. I advise you to stop using the machine and consider spending a few bucks on a genuine replacement. Visit the Lenovo service center and ask them to replace the battery.
Incorrect Setting:
Windows has many functions in the operating system. One incorrect setting can stop the system from turning on. Use the safe mode or recovery mode to disable functions.
Corrupted Operating System:
Unfortunately, many Windows administrators install pirated programs in the system. This pirated software has a trojan or rootkit and destroys the system files. I recommend that readers back up the data in an empty flash drive or external drive. Reinstall Windows using a Live USB drive.
Try a different operating system:
We know that the Lenovo laptop is not suffering from hardware failure. However, the laptop power issues keep surfacing from time to time. Install Linux operating systems such as Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or Kubuntu 22.04 LTS. You don’t have to worry about installing the drivers, programs, and Lenovo’s unique features. Linux software is clean and free from bloatware. You will find out whether the powering on or shutting down problems are due to Windows, Lenovo, or hardware failure.
Lenovo Ideapad Won’t Turn On or Shut Down: How to fix?
Let’s turn off the Lenovo unique feature, which turns on the laptop upon lifting the lid. Of course, we should get into the BIOS and disable the feature. The operating system or the hardware won’t take any negative impact after disabling the feature. Clear all doubts and worries in the bin because the laptop won’t get damaged. I will mention the risks when applying the solution, so read the entire tutorial until the end.
Disable Auto-On/Off Feature in Lenovo Ideapad
Lenovo has a Flip to Boot feature in the BIOS that controls the auto turn-on. Boot the laptop into the BIOS and disable the feature. I have shown you how to access the Ideapad BIOS and find the auto turn-on feature.

Charge your Windows laptop up to 50% or higher to avoid interruptions.
Shut down your laptop.
Do not close the lid.
Press the power button.
Press the BIOS key immediately.
You can access the BIOS using the F2 or F2 + Fn key. My Ideapad model booted into BIOS after pressing the F2 key.
Stop pressing the F2 or F2 + Fn key when you hear the beep sound.
Use the arrow keys and navigate to the ‘Configuration’ window from the top menu.
Find the ‘Flip to Boot’ option from the configuration menu.
Select the ‘Flip to Boot’ option and press the Enter key on the keyboard.
Use the arrow keys to select ‘Disabled’ and press the Enter key.
You have disabled the ‘Flip to Boot’ option.
Go to the ‘Exit’ menu using the arrow keys and select the ‘Exit Saving Changes’ option.
Select the ‘Yes’ option, then press the Enter key.
The Ideapad laptop shuts down or restarts. Turn on the Windows laptop and find out the result. You can repeat the same process and turn on the Flip to Boot feature later. Don’t assume that disabling the auto turn-on feature affects the system’s performance negatively.
Clean Ideapad Inside and Outside
Dust is the natural enemy of desktops and laptops. My Windows PC crashed several times, and the computer problems stopped after I cleaned the internal components.
Many laptops don’t get thorough cleaning once in a while. The small dust particles find a way to reach the tiny gaps and make their way into the motherboard. Many transistors and components get covered in debris and cause corrosion. Reach out to the Lenovo service center and ask them to clean the laptop. You can visit the certified service centers and get the machine cleaned for a lesser price.
Uninstall Pirated Programs
Privacy invaders use pirated programs as a tool to create a loophole in the system. The digital invaders spend time breaking down the software and providing the premium program for free. You install the pirated program in the system, and it will gain administrator privileges. Slowly the program will start injecting harmful malware and all sorts of threats.
1.Go to ‘Control Panel’ from the Start menu.
Click on the ‘Uninstall a program option under Programs.
Choose the program and uninstall it.
Remove all pirated programs from the system. We don’t know what damage the pirated program has caused in the Windows system files. Rootkit malware has the power to destroy and disguises itself as a system file.
Remove Malware from Windows
Windows occupies 70% market share, and it attracts invaders. You will find millions of malware pieces for Windows compared to the competition. Remove the malware or all sorts of threats from the computer because it will damage the system files. I don’t know whether you have installed an antivirus system on the Windows machine or not. I will show you how to use Microsoft’s built-in tool to remove the malware in Windows OS.
- Press the ‘Start’ key and search for ‘MRT’ in the search bar.
Press the Enter key to open the MRT service.
Click on the ‘Next’ option.
Select the ‘Full Scan’ option and click on the ‘Next’ option.
Let the MRT run a full system scan.
Leave your computer idle in the meantime and charge the battery.
- Click on the ‘Finish’ button when it’s done scanning.
Microsoft’s Malware Removal Tool will quarantine the threats from the system. You can use the built-in tool to remove all malware pieces from Windows 11 or earlier versions. I request the readers to Windows Update before starting the MRT tool. Update the virus definitions to quarantine the latest threats.
Modify Power Plan
Windows has an advanced startup feature, and you have to disable it. The operating system skips many processes while turning on the software. Disable the fast boot in Windows 11 or earlier versions. Put your Ideapad in safe mode and you can watch any YouTube video for instruction.
Press the ‘Start’ key and search for ‘Control Panel’ in the search bar.
Press the Enter key to open the Control Panel.
Click the ‘Hardware and Sound’ option.
Choose ‘Power Option’ from the menu.
Click on the ‘Choose what the power buttons do” option on the right side menu.
Click on the ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’ option.
Deselect the ‘Turn on fast startup (recommended) option.
Click on the ‘Save changes button.
Restart the Ideapad.
Reinstall Windows 11
My Windows 10 laptop had sixty malware pieces. I couldn’t remove them permanently because they came back a few days later. Format the Windows installed drive and reinstall the operating system using the live USB drive. Never install pirated programs and software.
Try Linux Operating System
I know it’s easier said than done. Try Linux operating system on your Ideapad laptop. We don’t know what’s causing the shutdown or won’t turn-on issues in the Windows software. There are multiple drivers, processes, and programs running in the background. It’s a challenge to find the culprit for a non-tech-savvy individual.
I have switched to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on the laptop.
a. You don’t have to install the drivers.
b. You can find many Windows programs like VLC, Firefox, Chrome, Discord, Spotify, Teamviewer, Deskreen, etc.
c. You have program alternatives like LibreOffice for MS Office, GIMP, or Krita for Photoshop, etc.
d. Install Steam and play games on Linux software.
However, I don’t encourage an avid gamer to switch to Linux for gaming because many games don’t support Linux.
Above all, you can try Linux operating system before installing them on the PC. Create a Live USB and test them in the demo version.
Bottom Line
Lenovo Ideapad must have hardware-related issues, and it’s the main reason why the laptop is not turning on or shutting down. Visit the Lenovo service center and claim the warranty. I would still recommend the readers approach Lenovo for repairs or battery replacement. Let us know how you solved the problem in the comment section.
