The LEGO Movie Sequel is going to address its predecessors rather shocking third-act turn into showing the real world. It’s obvious that Chris Pratt is doing exceptionally well these days, given that his current slate is filled with sequels. The star is currently promoting next month’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, the hugely anticipated new addition to the MCU, before moving on to the second, scarier film in the new Jurassic World franchise. In between his big live-action blockbusters, he’s also got another project on the go, the sequel to the phenomenally successful The LEGO Movie.
The animated adventure from 2014 was such a huge hit that it almost immediately spawned spin-offs, including The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO Ninjago Movie. The film that fans are most interested in seeing, however, is the straight-up sequel, The LEGO Movie Sequel, which is set to be directed by Trolls’ Mike Mitchell and continue the adventure where the first film left off. Now, star Pratt has revealed a little bit about what we can expect to see when the highly-anticipated sequel finally makes it onto the big screen.
While on the press tour for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Pratt told io9 that the sequel would be dealing with the shock fourth-wall-breaking ending of the original, although he refuses to give too much away:
Pratt is, of course, referring to the final moments of the first film where the LEGO world is revealed to be a model built in a businessman’s basement. The story has been created by his son, who is playing with the forbidden model, and injecting some imagination into the strict confines of the perfect world that his father (played by Will Ferrell) glues together.
“The first movie is a very difficult movie to create a sequel to because, as all the best movies do, it paints itself into a corner. Especially by tearing down the fourth wall in the final act. That’s a major jump, so they’ve got some really awesome ideas on how to deal with that and I can’t wait for people to see it.”
It’s difficult to know exactly where the sequel will take the characters from The LEGO Movie, although with original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller returning to write it’s sure to have the same subversive bent that made the original such a hit. It has been previously revealed that they will be heading into space; perhaps this means that the characters will be venturing into the ‘outer space’ environs of the real world, Toy Story-style?
Pratt is careful not to give too much away - and in the interview states he’s still in the early stages of involvement - but it’s reassuring to know that the follow-up film will deal with the original’s big twist, even if we don’t know exactly how they are going to do it just yet.
