The final season of FX’s Legion looks to be every bit as strange and visually arresting as the first two seasons. Though it lost its way a bit in season 2, the X-Men-adjacent series delivered an interesting twist in that it has positioned the massively powerful mutant David Haller (Dan Stevens) as the potential bringer of the apocalypse, with his supposed nemesis, Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban), aka the Shadow King, aligning himself with Division 3 in order to prevent David from bringing about the end of the world.

It was reported earlier this year that the series would have a relatively short three-season run, though given the various complexities (and shortcomings) of the story so far, that seems like a reasonable decision on behalf of series creator Noah Hawley and the powers that be at FX. But the show isn’t going to reach its sure-to-be-confounding conclusion without making a more overt nod to Marvel’s Merry Mutants. That is, David’s biological father, Charles Xavier. The powerful psychic has been portrayed famously in films before by the likes of Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy, but now Harry Lloyd (Counterpart) can count himself among those who’ve brought the character to life.

As expected, the first trailer for Legion season 3 focuses on what David has become in the aftermath of the season 2 finale, and where he plans to go. It also sets up a time-traveling showdown between various versions of David and his one-time girlfriend Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller). As Farouk admits in the trailer, eliminating David and preventing the end of the world is difficult given that the man they’re hunting can travel through time and warn himself of imminent danger. The series has certainly made a name for itself with its mind-bending visuals and its surreal storytelling. The show’s first season delivered plenty of noteworthy moments that seemingly set a high bar for what TV could accomplish with comic book adaptations, especially with characters that hinted at larger connections with the expansive Marvel Comics universe. That seems to be what Legion is driving at in season 3, with the addition of Charles Xavier and Stephanie Corneliussen (Mr. Robot), as David’s mother.

Though the trailer doesn’t make any overt attempt to introduce Professor X, there is a clear shot of Lloyd as Xavier wearing what appears to be the Cerebro helmet, something that will no doubt stand out to most viewers given its prominence in all the X-Men films. How that will play into Charles’s son becoming an immensely powerful mutant/spiritual guru/cult leader remains to be seen, but it will make for some interesting viewing come June.
