DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow is going to have a new antagonist in season 5 played by Joanna Vanderham. The producers of The CW’s off-the-wall, decade-hopping superhero series announced the involvement of the Warrior and Man in an Orange Shirt actress on Thursday, and it seems she has a score to settle with one of the Legends.
Legends of Tomorrow season 5 will follow the ragtag band of heroes known as they battle to save history from a new, magical threat, as well as handle their newfound status as celebrities in the wake of the timeline altering events of the Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover, where the entire multiverse was reconfigured and reset. As teased in last year’s finale, in this season the team will be facing off against various historical killers including Genghis Khan and Charles Manson, as well as a new foe who has just been cast.
According to Deadline, Joanna Vanderham (Warrior, Man in an Orange Shirt) will be portraying “a ruthless killing machine with daggers made of bones. Wherever she goes, death follows.” This character hasn’t been given a name yet, but she has been confirmed to be a villain, one with a past connection to Charlie, the British shapeshifter who joined the Legends in season 4 to avoid being banished to Hell. The producers of the series also tease that: “When [Vanderham’s character] arrives on the Waverider, Charlie — and the Legends — will never be the same.”
First airing in 2016, DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow won over fans of the Arrowverse with its off-the-rails tone that grew zanier with time (the finale of season 3 had a clash between a time demon and a giant, stuffed blue children’s toy, for example) and its varied cast of heroes and villains from both Arrow and The Flash getting a chance to shine in the main spotlight. Legends of Tomorrow’s season 5’s trailer promises more hi-jinks in the coming year, with Ray Palmer/The Atom serving as a sort of Mr. Rodgers parody and lovebirds Sara Lance/The White Canary and Eva Sharpe seemingly being transformed into puppets for an episode.
It’s still unclear where Joanna Vanderham’s new enemy stands in the wake of this madness, or what part she will play in the larger plot of season 5. Her noted bone daggers – which could be either a meta ability or some kind of forged weapon – don’t really match up with any character from DC Comics, but this wouldn’t be the first time the Arrowverse has created a new character for one of their shows. Still, the idea of bone weapons – which carry a supernatural connotation due to bones being a symbol of death– could tie in to her apparent history with Charlie, who escaped an eternity in the Spirit World in season 4 alongside countless other magical creatures. It’s possible that Vanderham’s character is also an escapee from this realm, using either a supernatural power or weapon in her pursuit of the shapeshifter. Fans will get a possible answer when DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow’s fifth season begins on January 21.
