Legends of Tomorrow seems to have hit its stride in its second season. Without a singular mission like they previously had hunting Vandal Savage, and with leader Rip Hunter missing in action, the team has needed to regroup. They travel through time fixing aberrations - changes to the timeline that affect the present and future - with Sara/White Canary as their new leader. Over time, they have come to discover that most of these aberrations are courtesy of Damien Darhk and the Reverse-Flash.
In the midseason finale, the Legends learned that Malcolm Merlyn had joined the other villains. Sara was forced to give the bad guys an amulet they were after in order to save Martin Stein’s life. Mick Rory saw Leonard Snart, though much more as the villain he was before Snart and Rory joined the Legends, and not at all like the hero who sacrificed himself to stop the Time Masters and save the team. Plus, the audience saw someone they had not seen for most of the season: Lost leader Rip Hunter is apparently alive and well - and directing movies.
According to the official synopsis for the midseason premiere released by The CW, Rip’s story is going to be explained as the team and he are finally reunited. Plenty of dangers face them all as they try to fix a new aberration and save Rip. The synopsis can be read here:
LOST MEMORIES — When Damien Darhk (guest star Neal McDonough) and Malcolm Merlyn (guest star John Barrowman) try to capture Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) in 1967, they create an Aberration big enough to draw the attention of the Legends. However, when the team arrives they discover that Rip has no memories of his past due to “time drift” and is just a graduate film student.
After trying to convince Rip of who he was, they discover that he possesses an incredibly powerful artifact known as the Spear of Destiny, which the Legion of Doom is after. Ray (Brandon Routh) and Nate (Nick Zano) realize that the Aberration has also affected them personally making it difficult to help the team. Meanwhile, Rory (Dominic Purcell) asks Stein (Victor Garber) for help and makes him promise to keep it a secret from the team.
Sounds like Rip is going to be in quite a bit of danger, as much from his memory loss as from Darhk and Merlyn. Without his memories, he’s probably not able to fight any more, or help the Legends make difficult decisions. When the Legends first assembled, he was the most knowledgeable, the most on top of things. It sounds like this is going to be a very different Rip.
As for Ray and Nate, while they are both fighters, thanks to Ray’s ATOM suit and Nate’s ability to turn himself into pure steel, their real abilities lie in their genius. Being affected by the aberration could be a big blow for both of them, especially Ray who has spent most of the season struggling to understand his role with the Legends.
It sounds like the second half of the season is upping the ante by threatening several members of the team. With the Legion of Doom coming together, the danger will almost certainly grow.
Legends of Tomorrow returns with ‘Raiders of the Lost Art’ on its new night, Tuesday January 24 at 9 pm on The CW.
