Matthew Vaughn helped reinvigorate the R-rated comic book genre in 2015, and now the first trailer of Kingsman: The Golden Circle marks the return of the franchise. Taron Egerton is bringing back everyone’s favorite up and coming British spy, but Eggsy will have a world filled with new characters in the sequel. Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, Halle Berry, and Jeff Bridges are members of the stateside version of the Kingsman, fittingly called the Statesman. Elsewhere, Julianne Moore plays the villain Poppy, and Elton John is appearing, too.
Returning from Kingsman is Mark Strong as Eggsy’s mentor Merlin, as well as Eggsy’s fellow Kingsman agents Sophie Cookson and Edward Holcroft - not to mention Colin Firth’s Harry Hart, whose recovery from his apparent death has yet to be explained. With a mixture of returning and new cast members and a generally secretive production, not much else on the Kingsman sequel has been made known, before now.
Following the release of a super-fast Kingsman 2 trailer teaser, 20th Century Fox has released the first proper trailer for Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The trailer offers up plenty of Eggsy, humor, and action, while also introducing audiences to a number of the new characters in the movie.
The trailer does little to detail the plot of the sequel, but instead chooses to use a somber tone with its high-octane action. The Kingsman are clearly being hunted (presumably by Moore’s Poppy) and are forced to team up with the Statesman. It doesn’t reveal why the two opposing sections of government agencies decide to work together, but the fate of the world and getting the girl are two likely options.
However, even without going through the plot of the movie, it does offer up one early surprise: Colin Firth’s return as Harry Hart. While the marketing has made it clear before that Hart would be returning in some fashion, this is the first look offered up. After his supposed death at the hand of Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson), Harry is back with a noticeable addition to his wardrobe and is now sporting an eye-patch. Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong) are shown reacting to his unveiling, but how exactly he survived is still up for debate.
As the first of what should be multiple trailers, this offers up a good re-introduction to the series. Once marketing kicks into high gear (which should be soon given its September release date), finding more out about Poppy, the Statesman, and Harry’s return should be some of the major points addressed. In the meantime, the trailer gives just enough talking points to let fans speculate on all of this and more until then.
