Kim Kardashian West will work to reform prisoners in her new documentary, Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star also serves as an executive producer on the project while running her successful businesses and raising four children.

After pioneering the one-time uncharted landscape of social media, Kardashian West has reinvented herself by following in the footsteps of her late father, Robert Kardashian. He was a highly regarded attorney who served as a member of O.J. Simpson’s infamous dream team. Her latest onscreen venture is a two-hour documentary in which she strives to overturn some of the more extreme prison sentences currently being served in the United States. Some of the cases the show will examine are those of Alexis Martin, David Sheppard, Dawn Jackson, and Momolu Stewart. However, it was Alice Marie Johnson’s case that inspired Kardashian to fight for social justice. When she heard that the great-grandmother was serving a life sentence for a non-violent offense, Kardashian championed her cause until she was released in June 2018, after serving 21 years in jail.

There has been a trickle-down effect with Kardashian’s hard work. Many organizations that had struggled to get the word to the public that they could help with prison bail and other byproducts of prison reform are now getting a boost in donations as well as publicity. The National Bailout Committee and Appolition are two such programs that are garnering attention. However, there has also been backlash that Kardashian is usurping attention from black activists who have been working to do the same thing for decades. While her wealth and high-profile give her an edge over her predecessors, it’s unclear whether any of the prisoners are taking issue with who is helping to set them free.

Kim revealed (via The Wrap)that she partnered with Oxygen channel to create the Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project documentary “because there are millions of people impacted by this broken justice system.” She explained her motivation behind it, saying:

What Kim Kardashian West is doing for prison reform is absolutely inspiring. True, her younger sister Kylie has taken over as the family bombshell. However, this has allowed O.G. Keeping Up With the Kardashians fans to grow with Kim as she steps into this new role of personal and professional development. While it’s been widely reported that her husband Kanye is contemplating a political run for the presidency in 2024, Kim could actually be the family member to get there first. She’s fighting for those who have no voice, and not only that, she’s been successful applying bipartisan politics to get the job done.

“I wanted to put faces to these numbers and statistics. There are a lot of people who deserve a second chance, but many do not have the resources to make it happen. I want to help elevate these cases to a national level to effect change, and this documentary is an honest depiction of me learning about the system and helping bring tangible results to justice reform.”
